Power of the Arts to Heal

Carmen is a Registered Clinical Social Worker, Registered Expressive Arts Therapist and Registered Canadian Art Therapist in private practice. She is the founder and director of the Prairie Institute of Expressive Arts Therapy (PIEAT).

Having been a trainer of the expressive arts for over 15 years now, I love the magic it brings to the groups. In reality, I began running expressive arts groups over 30 years ago. It began with offering retreats for women. I knew nothing about the fields of art or expressive arts therapy. I did know, using the arts to build community and connection is where I gravitated to intuitively. Looking back at some of those photos now from so long ago (see below), I am in awe of the power of the arts to heal - even then at a time when I simply knew, the arts and community building made sense. Now, three decades later, this field has flourished and I believe, the arts have more space to take in the therapeutic world. I am excited to continue the learning and sharing with others at WHEAT this summer!
